Here's a quick tip for amateur photographers. Clean your lens. I saw several photos made by friends that where great. Good subject, nice composition, good light but the photo was blurry. Know why? They forgot to wipe their lens!
Their children were playing with their camera and touched the lens so there was finger prints and oils on the lenses resulting in blurry photos, wrong focus or flares on the resulting photos.
Get a cheap microfiber eyeglass cloth and keep it with your camera at all times. Wipe the lens before you start shooting.
