Take Photos In Space

What would it take for you to take some photos from space? Do you need NASA size budgets and engineering? Do you have to learn rocket science? Think again.

What would take millions of dollars for NASA to do. Two students beat NASA on beer-money budget.

The two students (from MIT, where else could they be from), put together a low budget rig and flew a camera to the edge of space.

They strapped a Canon A470 compact camera into a styrofoam beer cooler, put instant hand warmers to keep the battery from freezing and warm enough to work and hung that from a helium filled weather balloon.

To make sure they can retrieve the rig when it fell landed, they put a pre-paid GPS-equipped cellphone inside the box for tracking.

Total cost including the tape? $148.

My Canon SD880IS camera is more expensive than their whole rig!

Here are some photos they've taken.

Here's a time-lapse video of the launch.
