I was in Subic Bay testing out my camera when I decided to try some composition shots. Using middle, rule of thirds, landscape and portrait shots.
Which one do you think is the best?
Subject at lower left point of rule of thirds.
Portrait orientation, subject at upper left of rule of thirds.

As you can see, the first picture is quite bland. When the subject is right smack down the middle on all sides. There is no sense of movement or dynamic to the picture. In short, it's boring.
In the second picture, I put the subject in the middle, but moved it lower to the lower third of the picture. This photo emphasizes the sky more.
The third picture is placed on the lower left intersection of the rule of thirds. This is brings a different dynamic to the photo. It also gives more space for you to see the surrounding area. This type of shots are good if you are taking a photo of someone and want to show the background.
The fourth photo is shot using portrait orientation, with the subject on the upper left intersection. The emphasis it brings to the photo is that is shows that this is on the beach since more of the sand is being shown and only a little bit of the sea is shown. You still know where this picture is taken, but I emphasized how far I was from the sign instead of how far the sign was from the beach.
Try out different composition with your shots, it can be with people or inanimate objects. Take several shots using different orientation and position of your subject. See what works best. Don't be afraid to experiment.
