Lighting

>> Friday, March 6, 2009

Perhaps the most important aspect of photography is the lighting. Proper lighting creates the mood for your photograph.

How the shadows fall, where the light is coming from, how the sun is shining at your subject's face makes or breaks a good photo.

For example, if you have the sun behind or above you subject, it creates dark shadows which may make your subject look older or have longer or shorter noses. Which in some cases, may not be flattering.

In cases like this where the sun is very bright, you might think you don't need a flash. But in reality, that is exactly when you need to use your flash. When the sun is very bright and creating deep shahows on your subject's face, use the flash to even out the light and remove the shadows.

How the light is positioned in relation to the subject creates a certain mood to your photo.

Try it and see the difference on your photos.

About This Blog

I got interested in photography so I can take great photos of my son. Sadly, most of the photos I took of my newborn son was terrible. So I decided I was going to learn more about photography so I can document his life better.

This site is my way of sharing what I have learned about photography. I haven't taken any photography lessons. Most of my knowledge comes from experience and from reading books.

I believe that in photography, "it's the photographer and not the camera" that makes great photo. That's what someone who doesn't have a DSLR would say, which I don't.

I hope you learn something from this site. Please leave a comment or you can e-mail me at selihpxe[at]gmail.com.
